In the current VMware lineup, the Pro edition carries the broader feature set that used to be split between Player and Pro, so the product is best read as a workstation-scale VM tool rather than a lightweight viewer.
The useful evaluation lens is friction under repeated use: how quickly a guest boots, whether snapshots and cloning are easy to return to, how clearly the docs explain advanced networking, and how well the VM moves between local use and vSphere or ESXi. It is strongest when you want predictable host-side isolation on Windows or Linux, and less compelling if your team wants browser access or a cloud-managed VM fleet.
